One of Aberdeen’s most iconic buildings, the Roundhouse at the North Pier, has been given a new lease of life after controlling ship traffic in and out of Aberdeen Harbour for more than 200 years. 

The Roundhouse, the former Navigation Control Centre on Pocra Quay, now houses Seacroft Marine Consultants Ltd - leading providers of marine and offshore consultancy and marine safety services to UK and overseas markets, which moved its operation from Waterloo Quay to its new home. 

The Roundhouse was made redundant in 2006 when the £4.5m state-of-the-art Marine Operations Centre opened nearby. Built around 1800, the eye-catching listed building has stood the test of time, and now, after a £190,000 refurbishment programme undertaken by Morrison Construction on behalf of Aberdeen Harbour Board, it has Seacroft as long-term tenants. 

Aberdeen-based office design and fit-out specialists, ASM, was commissioned by Seacroft to design a modern/professional office with a nautical theme, along with space planning layouts, for the new Roundhouse complex. 

Shelley McCaul, head of design at ASM, worked closely with Michael Cowlam, technical director of Seacroft, to produce the finished design. The architectural work was undertaken by GPA Humphries Architects, Albury Road, Aberdeen. 

Jennifer Fraser, logistics director of Seacroft said: “Our support services require an active involvement with the vessels within the port itself and some of our training services take place in Aberdeen Harbour Board’s ship simulator located in the Marine Operations Centre nearby - so the location is ideal for us”.
